Should you challenge your workers more?

Employee rewards programs provide an excellent platform to challenge your workers to go the extra mile or push for ambitious goals.

Employee rewards programs provide an excellent platform to challenge your workers to go the extra mile or push for ambitious goals. Although it's important to keep morale high – such as by offering enticing incentives – encouraging your team to improve their performance and strive for greater productivity can also help to keep them more engaged and interested on the job.

For example, an MTV survey revealed that 89 percent of millennials think they should be constantly learning on the job, Viacom reported. In other words, people want opportunities to hone their professional skills, learn new techniques and advance their careers. Creating challenging objectives and furnishing workers with the resources to develop the skills they need to achieve those goals can keep team members on their toes while engaging their minds.

Keeping stress at a manageable level is crucial, but studies have shown that people are at their most productive when they're not bored, either. Therefore, managers should ensure that the workplace environment they foster is one where workers feel interested, challenged and supported in their activities, rather than overwhelmed by too much tension and work or bored by repetitive, overly simple goals.
