Maggie Owens, HR manager for EMEA FedEx, told Real Business that tying an employee awards program with a company's main HR policy is an extremely effective way to achieve departmental goals while raising morale.

She said employee recognition programs are a great way to motivate staff, especially when companies reward team members who enhance customer service and profitability while exemplifying the spirit of teamwork. And she said that these types of programs should be implemented across all departments.

A points-based rewards system is one way to personalize a recognition program, by letting workers who go the extra mile pick out an award of their choice.
