Companies preparing for National Employee Wellness Month

Summer provides warm weather that can inspire employees to get outside for some exercise, which is why June is National Employee Wellness Month.

Summer provides warm weather that can inspire employees to get outside for some exercise, which is why June is National Employee Wellness Month.

The initiative is designed to help organizations engage workers in healthy lifestyles. Last year, more than 150 organizations participated in the program sponsored by Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance. Businesses that want to join the initiative need to start early to plan their own wellness movements.

Employee incentive programs provide businesses with the means to motivate and engage their staff members. By using rewards and recognizing top performers, organizations can create a corporate culture that values exercise and healthy eating. A wellness-focused culture will encourage workers to start weight-loss groups and other initiatives that support workers in their efforts to adopt a healthy lifestyle that can also boost employee performance. Without incentive programs, it can be extremely challenging for businesses to change the culture of their workforce.

"A healthy workforce is critical for employers that want to create a productive and high-performing organization. Yet, engaging employees in sustainable lifestyle change can be a real challenge," said Chris Boyce, CEO of Virgin HealthMiles, a sponsor for National Employee Wellness Month.
