Companies turn to incentives to improve employee health

Healthy employees are productive employees, which is why more businesses are initiating employee incentive programs as part of their corporate wellness programs.

Healthy employees are productive employees, which is why more businesses are initiating employee incentive programs as part of their corporate wellness programs.

A new survey by Aon Hewitt found that 83 percent of employers offer some incentives for participating in health awareness programs. Employees are encouraged to conduct regular health screenings, including blood pressure, biometric testing and filling out health risk questionnaires. To get staff members to participate, employers are using a mix of rewards and penalties, and many feel that the measures have worked to boost motivation, engagement levels and staff productivity.

"Today employers mainly rely on financial incentives to drive desired activities and behaviors, ranging from building awareness to achieving specific health outcomes," said Stephanie Pronk, health transformation leader for Health & Benefits at Aon Hewitt. "However, in the near future, these designs will be most successful and impactful when they are linked to an organizational culture that makes it easier for employees to make healthier personal decisions."

Company culture can have a significant influence on employee habits by establishing parameters of expected behavior. Organizations that seek to reduce healthcare costs could benefit from creating a supportive, health-conscious environment. Public support and recognition available through employee reward programs make it easier to engage workers.
