Employees cite telecommuting for better work-life balance

One offering some businesses are incorporating into their employee reward programs is flexible working arrangements, such as telecommuting.

One offering some businesses are incorporating into their employee reward programs is flexible working arrangements, such as telecommuting.

Many experts consider the option to work from home to be a top draw for hiring the best talent. It gives individuals the freedom and responsibility to be innovative and creative, while only requiring them to provide companies with the desired results.

A recent survey from Microsoft listed some of the top benefits of telecommuting from staff members' perspective. The number one advantage cited was that the strategy maintains work-life balance (60 percent), followed by expenses saved on gas (55 percent), avoidance of traffic (47 percent), more productive (45 percent) and fewer distractions (44 percent).

However, the survey noted some employers are still resistant, as the arrangements mean they cannot witness productivity firsthand. Yet entrepreneurial expert Kevin Kruse claims this is really just seeing a worker's presence.

"If managers would just establish goals, rhythms of communication and metrics, than they would actually know whether someone was being productive or not, regardless of where the person was physically sitting," Kruse writes for Forbes.
