Can employees work on a treadmill?

Many major companies have linked employee well-being to rewards and recognition programs in an effort to reduce absenteeism, increase productivity and cut healthcare costs.

Many major companies have linked employee well-being to rewards and recognition programs in an effort to reduce absenteeism, increase productivity and cut healthcare costs.

Often, these initiatives involve handing out pedometers to staff members or offering them incentives to stop smoking. However, some employers are taking drastic measures to prevent workers from leading a sedentary lifestyle and racking up high healthcare expenses.

For example, Salo, a Minneapolis-based financial consulting firm, has installed 12 treadmill desks in its office, NPR reports. The workspaces are used by employees on a rotation, and have already registered results among staff members.

Craig Dexheimer, the firm's director of operations and administration, is enthusiastic about his treadmill desk. In fact, since he started using it, he has lost 25 pounds, the news source explains. Furthermore, the business participated in study that found the firm's revenues were the highest ever while using the treadmill desks.

Some businesses may be unable to fit treadmill desks into their office spaces. However, they can institute office games and walking meetings to keep workers moving.
