Employees, firms see the benefits of incentivizing cycling to work

Businesses are adopting a number of strategies for employee rewards to help get workers in shape to improve productivity and cut healthcare costs.

Businesses are adopting a number of strategies for employee rewards to help get workers in shape to improve productivity and cut healthcare costs.

One option for firms is incentivizing how staff members get to and from the workplace. A recent survey by Nesta found that nearly half of employees would cycle to their office if their bosses offered rewards or forms of recognition for doing so.

Factors that would help promote increased cycling and a decreased dependence on automobiles included a safe place to store bikes (40 percent), available bike maintenance (31 percent), showers (29 percent) and training sessions (14 percent).

Both employers and workers saw the benefits of cycling to work. Forty-eight percent of firms and staff members said that riding bicycles to work creates a healthier workforce and cuts down on sick days. Additionally, 49 percent believed it would help them meet their environmental goals.

However, not all employees are able to cycle to work for various reasons. Businesses will want to make sure they provide their workforce with similar incentives to walk or use public transportation.
